The smartphone, which has been in the US for a few months now, sports a 3.1-inch touchscreen with a gesture-powered interface. Unlike the iPhone, it features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The Palm Pre uses WebOS, a derivative of Linux (a bit like Google’s Android) and has a light sensor which adjusts the display’s brightness.

O2 has exclusive rights to the Pre in the UK and the phone will also be available through the Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U.

To get the phone for free, you will have to sign up to an eye-watering £44 per month tariff fr 18 months. Otherwise the cheapest tariff will cost £29.38 per month and an upfront payment of £96 (the same as the iPhone).

Otherwise you may as well just buy an iPhone, Blackberry Storm or the ever-popular Nokia N900.
