Looking into our crystal ball offers some interesting insights. Could our vision of Jedward’s platinum-selling album be real? Will Kerry Katona be parachuted into the jungle with a range of Iceland goods strapped to her torso? And is there a new Sony brand of cameras called NXCAM due out in 2010?
Well, only one of those is true (we hope) as Sony has revealed that a new file-based camcorder will be launched at the beginning of 2010.
Sony said the new NXCAM family of products “represents the professional implementation of AVCHD technology”.
According to the technology company, AVCHD has been widely and rapidly adopted in the consumer sector of the camcorder market.
“And now, with further developments in non-linear editing tools and IT products, Sony will provide products for the entry-level professional videographer based on this file-based MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 Long-GOP image compression.”
“Now is the right time to productise an entry-level memory based camcorder utilising the latest AVCHD technology with low-cost consumer memory cards,” said Bill Drummond, senior product marketing manager at Sony Europe.
Drummond added that the latest innovations in lens and sensor design would offer outstanding picture performance.
Sony will demonstrate a prototype camcorder with some of the upcoming features at its Power of Images event in London on 25-26 November.
“This will be a 3 x 1/3 inch Exmor CMOS camcorder with ClearVid array utilising the ‘G’ series 20x zoom lens first seen on the HVR-Z5E,” a Sony statement said.
“The camcorder will record AVCHD up to 24Mbps 1,920 x 1.080 high definition images with both interlace and progressive modes, along with 720/50p and MPEG-2 SD for PAL recording. It will also feature 2-channel linear PCM audio capabilities.”
The camcorders will use Memory Stick Pro Duo recording media along with an optional 128GB Flash Memory Unit for Hybrid Recording.
Prices for cameras in the new range were not released.
