EyeGrowing old isn’t all accumulated wisdom and a retired life of Riley – old age can also bring cataracts and long-sightedness. But a new technique allows surgeons in the UK to give people improved vision – in HD!

The process sees patients’ eyes fitted with an artificial lens, which is a standard procedure in the treatment of cataracts.

Doctors then fine-tune the focus of the lens several days later to offer vision so sharp that it is even better than a normal human eye’s top level of 20/20!

The lens is made from a special light-sensitive silicone and the fine-tuning works by shining ultraviolet light on it to change its shape and curvature.

Bob Qureshi, the first ophthalmic surgeon in the UK to use the lens, told Sky News it was “a hugely significant development”.

“We have the potential here to change patients’ vision to how it was when they were young,” Qureshi told Sky News.

“The change is so accurate that we can even make the lens bifocal or varifocal, so as well as giving them good vision at distance we can give them good vision for reading.

The adjustments can be made several times until the vision is perfected and then it is set permanently using a final blast of light.
