world_of_warcraftGamers in Britain spend nearly £200m on MMOs such as World of Warcraft according to new research.

The study carried out by TNS and Gamesindustry.com found that around 1.5 million in the UK spend about £10.50 monthly on these massively-multiplayer games.

More than £195 million is spent in this country. Germans manage to spend £165m, while the French fork out £145 million. But all these figures are dwarfed by the US, where a gargantuan £2.55 billion is shelled out each month.

Monthly subscriptions make up 41 per cent of the total, £16 million is spent on annual subscriptions, while another £24 million goes on extension packs and the games themselves.

A further £38 million goes towards buying virtual currency to be spent in-game.

Spenser Chi, head of EU operations at Aeria Games & Entertainment, said: “With every game launch, we find a new population of users without noticeable cannibalisation of our other titles. This is a sign to us that the MMO market will continue to grow in number of players as well as revenue.”
