nintendo-dsi-xlAfter a few months of speculation that Nintendo were going to announce a proper successor to the DS (not just an upgrade), they’ve, er, done it. IN 3D!

Yes indeed, the forthcoming 3DS is, as its name suggests, a handheld that uses 3D effects (we hear they’re popular of late). It apparently won’t require any special glasses to work. It’ll be fully compatible with all DS and DSi games, too.

In a recent interview, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata claimed that the machine will have “a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing”. We suspect that this will tie in to the 3D effect – there’s a clip on YouTube of a new DSi game that uses the machine’s camera to read how the user’s moving the machine. It then extrapolates that data to create a rather nifty 3D appearance, and it seems like the sort of thing that could be put into the new machine easily.

At any rate, the 3DS will be officially unveiled at this year’s E3 in June. Nintendo have already said it’ll be on sale between April 2010 and March 2011. We suspect that’s a typo, as releasing a new machine in just over a week and two months before it’s officially unveiled seems rather unlikely.
