iPhone_3GS_vodafoneWant free BBC news straight to your iPhone? There won’t be an app for that.

The corporation was planning to release free news and sports applications for iPhones next month, but have put the idea on ice after concerns about unfair market advantage.

The BBC Trust apparently heard concerns from newspaper publishers that the releases would unfairly influence the market for news apps. Newspapers are seeking to capitalise on the iPhone in order to make up for falling print sales. In the U.S., papers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times have announced agreements with Apple for special subscription packages.

The Trust now intends to review its plans and decide whether the apps would violate the BBC’s public service agreement.
