If you like smartphones but don’t like the expensive price tag, then you’ll be pleased to know mobile operator 3 has launched some Android phones for less than £100 pay-as-you-go.

TheZTE Racer is the first Android smartphone to be sold in the UK for £99. If you prefer contracts then you can get the phone for nowt on a £15 monthly contract.

Luckily, the phone has specs worthy of consideration. It sports 2.8in QVGA touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity, a 3.2MP camera and it’s thrown in a 2GB microSD card.

Also, it features Android OS 2.1 and as it is a normal install, upgrading the firmware shouldn’t be too painful.

“We’re really excited to bring the ZTE Android smartphone into our range”, says David Kerrigan, head of internet service, Three UK. “Combining the power of Android and the strength of our 3G network, we’re enabling more and more customers to get a great mobile internet experience at a price that’s right for them”

Of course, all is not rosy in the techie garden. It comes with a resistive, not capacitive touchscreen, but for the cash, that’s what you’d expect, right?
