With the Android operating system, phone manufacturers know that the software is pretty much tried and tested. All they have to worry about is the hardware. This means that reasonably-priced phones can ppunch above their weight. But is the Vodafone 845 a contender?

The Vodafone 845 is an own-brand smartphon that is aimed at the budget conscious. It is your normal monoblock form factor with a stripped-down design sporting a 2.8-inch TFT QVGA screen. The display supports up to 65,000 colours, and the device comes with the alomost-standard accelerometer which allows for display auto rotation. Under the screen sit the hard navigation and menu control keys, as well as the dedicated call send/end keys.

The phone has almost the latest version of Andriod (OS 2.1) and comes with applications such as Google Earth, Google Goggles and full Google SatNav with voice navigation. As it’s a Vodafone phone, it als comes with Vodafone 360, which lets to concentrate all your contacts in one place via the social networks you use.

Confusingly, Vodafone 360 has an App store as well as Andriod so you can pick apps from either.

There are a range of connectivity options including dual band 3.6 Mbps HSDPA as well as WiFi 802.11 b/g, GPRS and EDGE. There is also Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP for local connectivity and stereo audio streaming. On the side sits a Micro USB connector for hooking up to a PC.

It comes with 512MB internal capacity, but this can be expanded to 16GB with a Micro SD card.

The handset comes in black or white (like an iPhone 4) and because it can gather apps fom two stores the entertainment options are endless.

Camera-wise, it has a 3.2 Megapixel lens with autofocus and LED flash. It can also record video. Pictures images are good for the price and the onboard video editing app makes video editing on the fly easy to do.

Their is a media play capable of supporting the most popular formats including MP3, AAC and MP4.

As mentioned earlier, the phone also includes a full GPS receiver with aGPS support.

As would be expected from any Android phone, there is full email support including push email, with an on board document viewer that allows you to view email attachments in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDFs. As well as this there is Instant Messaging, and SMS messages, which are listed in a threaded view, making it easier to follow conversations. This all alongside access to services like Twitter,Facebook, et al.

Usually, branded handsets don’t leap out at you for many good reasons, but this one, while it won’t set the world on fire, it may spark a flame in your heart. With the 2.1 OS on-board and access to two apps stores out of the box, there is a lot of high-end in this low-end phone.
