ifixit_logoGamers are getting short-changed by companies that make games consoles, according to repair company iFixit. “The game console industry is hostile to consumers: goliath manufacturers have shipped hundreds of millions of units to consumers with no information on how to maintain or repair them. Console owners are left with few options when their warranties expire, causing many to throw away broken units,” a statement from the site said.

“That changes now,” the statement continued. “We are releasing a free, open source, community-authored repair manual for every major game console.”

The company has published repair manuals for 24 game consoles, which are available online now.

The manuals walk users through step-by-step instructions to perform 206 different repairs and upgrades. Each device has a troubleshooting page to help diagnose what’s wrong and what to do to fix it.

As well as releasing repair manuals, iFixit is launching a repair parts and tools store for game consoles.

iFixit said that the ability for consumers to repair devices of all kinds is “stuck in the 20th Century”. It also said its new advice and supply service would “change the game console industry forever”.

Games consoles with repair manuals include: Microsoft’s Xbox, Xbox 360 and 360 S; Nintendo’s N64, GameCube and Wii, the Sega Dreamcast; and Sony’s PlayStation 1, 2, 3, and 3 Slim.

Handheld consoles covered by the scheme include Nintendo’s Game Boy Original, Advance and Micro, as well as the DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL; Sega’s Game Gear and Sony’s PSP 1000, 2000, 3000, and Go.
