boris_johnsonThe days when going into the tube and losing internet connectivity could be a thing of the past as the London Underground is planning to put wireless internet into its stations.

The trial will run for six months and see Charing Cross station’s ticket hall and Northern and Bakerloo platforms become wireless enabled. However, access on trains will be trickier (unless you’re at a station for a long while).

The service should also see live updates of tube service. The trial is to see if the service works and if there is significant take up of the service. BT is funding the trial.

“Wi-Fi is rapidly becoming the simplest way for people to access the internet when out and about and with the launch of this trial at Charing Cross we are now giving commuters the chance to enjoy the UK’s biggest Wi-Fi network,” said Chris Bruce, CEO of BTOpenzone.

Wireless connectivity will be free to any BT Broadband customer with unlimited BT FON wi-fi minutes. Customers of O2 , Tesco Mobile , Vodafone , Orange and other Wi-Fi enabled devices with Wi-Fi minutes in their contracts can also use the network.

Mayor Boris Johnson is supporting the trial and has pledged to make the Underground as well as the whole of London a “wireless hotspot” by the 2012 Olympics.
