facebook_logoFacebook has launched a virtual currency that you can buy from Tesco (for real money of course!)

The Credits, also available from video game retailer Game, can be purchased and used on the social networking site to buy things, such in game items in Farmville and Mafia Wars.

No doubt, Facebook Credits will end up as a gift voucher in someone’s Christmas stocking this year. The credits can be used in over 200 Facebook-based apps and games.

Deborah Liu, manager of product for Facebook Credits and games at Facebook, told the Telegraph that Facebook  was considering expanding the system to third-party websites via Facebook Connect.

“Someday it’s something that we would consider but there’s a lot that we want to do on Facebook.com for now,” she said.

In September the social networking giant announced that Credits would be rolling out across 1,750 stores in the US including the likes of Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart.

In the UK, GAME will punt £5, £10 and £25 Facebook Credits gift cards, while Tesco will offer the credits in £10 and £20 forms.

“We now offer a range of gift cards and social gaming is becoming increasingly popular, so we are pleased to offer what might be an ideal Christmas present.” said Euan Ballantyne, head of cards at Tesco Bank.
