sky_hdSatelite broadcaster Sky has won the rights to show James Cameron’s Avatar over Christmas, making it the first channel in the world to show the movie on 3D TV.

The sci-fi epic, which swept up at the box office and won a few Oscars as well, will be first shown on Sky 3D at 8pm on Christmas Eve.

John Cassy, Sky 3D’s channel director, said of the deal: “Confirming Avatar in our Christmas line up for Sky 3D is a huge honour and fantastic news for customers.”

“We hope 3D will bring people together to enjoy a whole new television experience  over this festive and special time of year,” he added.

The channel will also be showing Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in 3D on New Year’s Eve as well as all three Toy Story movies in 3D.
