Apple has delivered the developer version of its new Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Gold Master to developers, readying the way for a full consumer release some time later this year.

Just as Microsoft gets its Windows 8 ready for release in October, Apple appears to be doing it best to steal the show with its iOS-inspired operating system. While Apple calls code almost ready for the consumer “Golden Master”, Microsoft calls it “Release to Manufacturing”.

The appearance of the Mountain Lion Golden Master was spotted by Apple blog 9to5Mac, among others. This signals that a general release is not too far away.

Last year, Apple released the Golden Master of Lion on 1July with general availabliliy coming 19 days later on 20 July.

The new release of Mountain Lion brings Siri to the MacBooks, iMacs, and Mac Pros as well as Messages, Notes and Reminders. It’s hoped that this will bring seamless mobile and desktop integration.

There is also AirPlay Mirroring to transmit content from a Mac to a big TV via Apple TV.

Mountain Lion – tightened requirements

Apple has also tightened requirement on which Mac will be eligible for the the Mountain Lion update. Among these are:

The Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 will go on sale with a price tag on $20 in the US, while we brings have to stump up a bit more as usual and shell out £20. The release should happen before or possibly with the rumoured launch of the iPhone 5 and smaller-sized Apple iPad. As with Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion looks set to only be available on the Mac App Store, rather than on a disc.
