A follow-up to the HTC Flyer could be on sale in the UK by the end of the year, HTC revealed today. The mobile device maker told PC Advisor it will be making the HTC Flyer 2 but didn’t divulge details of when. This will be the first new tablet from HTC since the original Flyer, launched in May last year.

Specifications are a complete mystery at present, however it should run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The original Flyer came with an electronic pen for easier writing. It also ran Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread (later upgraded to Honeycomb. It original cost around £600, which proved a bit too rich for some people’s pockets.

The only other HTC tablet released was the HTC Jetstream, a 10-inch LTE tablet that never made it to these shores from the US where it was launched.

HTC has had a bad time in the market; it was refuse entry to the Windows 8 party after Microsoft said it didn’t have enough experience in the tablet market to produce such a device.

A new device would at least prove to Microsoft that it has the chops to make a tablet. In an interview with IntoMobile.com, the firm said it was going to “rethink” its approach to tablets, and needed to “differentiate” from the competition.

The timing could have been better with a rumoured iPad mini in the works and confirmation that Amazon will bring its Kindle Fire to these shores in time for Christmas.
