Powerline adaptors in the past have suffered from being rather outsized considering their function. However, Netgear is leading the way and hopefully, others should take note on making their powerline products smaller.

The Netgear Powerline Nano 500 Set extends your internet access to any electrical outlet for the most demanding applications. It offers easy, plug-and-play setup and faster speeds, all in a convenient small design, and is perfect for connecting smart TV’s, HD set-top boxes, 3D HD videos, Blu-ray players, DVR’s, PC’s and gaming consoles to your home network and the internet.

The small units house three LEDs that show power, Ethernet connectivity and powerline status. The last light shows red for power connections of less than 50Mbps, amber for up to 80Mbps and green for connection speeds above that.

Luckily, the port themselves are all Gigabit Ethernet, so these won’t be the bottleneck in the network. The box comes with an installation guide, although this is largely unnecessary. But a CD with utilities to check the network would have been welcome.

In use, the network is good enough, if undistinguished, managing read speed of around 62.6 MBPS and a write speed of 54.3 Mbps. But the reliability was a welcome feature.

Overall, a reliable option for anyone needing the latest 500Mbps powerline standard, even if the performance is not mind-blowing.

The powerline adaptor is available from Amazon.
