The new old Google Maps managed to score 10 million downloads within 48 hours of its release, Google confirmed.

Google’s Senior Vice President of Commerce and Local, Jeff Huber confirmed the number making the app one of the most successful app launches ever on the iPhone.

Users rushed to download the new map weeks after the Apple Maps debacle left users fuming at the poor substitute Apple foisted upon its users after the iOS6 upgrade shortly after the iPhone 5 launch.

“More than 10 million download in less than 48 hours after release,” said Huber on Google’s own social network Google+. “We’re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7 years.”

While Google Maps is available to iPhone and iPod Touch devices, an iPad version is not currently on the cards until 2013.

Shortly after it was discovered that Apple Maps sucked badly, Apple chief executive Tim Cook made a statement admitting that not everything with Apple Maps had gone according to plan.

“With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better,” said Cook.

Not everything is rosy in the Google garden. As reported on Absolute Gadget, Google blamed LG for the late arrival of Nexus 4 smartphones in user’s hands.
