Kobo has launched its latest ebook reader, the Aura HD, in a bid to compete with Amazon’s Kindle.

The Kobo Aura HD sports a 6.8in e-Ink Pearl display with pixel density of 265ppi. This, it said was the best ebook screen resolution on the market.

It features a 1GHz processor with Kobo claiming that this makes it the fastest eBook reader on the market, with a  battery life of “up to two months.”

The Aura HD also boasts 4GB of on-board storage with a microSD card for further expansion. It also comes with 10 different fonts and 24 adjustable font sizes.

IT comes with Wi-Fi connectivity options so readers can hook up to Kobo’s bookshop offering 3.2 million titles. IT also supports Pub, PDF and Mobi-format eBooks, as well as plain text, HTML, XHTML and RTF files, JPEG, GIF, PNG and TIFF images, and the CBZ and CBR compressed comic book formats.

“From the beginning, Kobo has pushed the eReading industry to new heights and today is no exception. Kobo Aura HD is designed for the most passionate book lovers – those who devour hundreds of stories each year – who asked us to create the ultimate eReading experience. Kobo Aura HD is our way of celebrating these customers,” said Michael Serbinis, CEO of Kobo.

The Kobo Aura HD is available for pre-order on 16 April with general availability from 25 April. It will cost £139.99 and comes in Ivory, Espresso, and Onyx colours.

“To us, the Kobo Aura HD is the Porsche of eReaders and is designed for those in the driver’s seat of their eReading adventures. It’s fast, powerful, and sleek and pushes the boundaries of eReading the same way our Readers do – together, they’ll know no bounds as they find their next great read,” commented Wayne White, European vice president at Kobo.
