In a bid to outdo Google with its Chromecast TV stick, Roku has launched its own Streaming Stick for plugging into the back of your TV.

The device plugs into an HDMI socket on you telly and can be powered by a normal plug or more usefully, the spare USB port most TVs seem to possess.

The stick will enable viewers to access services such as Netflix, Now TV and BBC iPlayer, working in a similar way to the Roku Box devices.

It can stream from more than 750 channels including movies, TV episodes, music, news, sports and free programming, all in up to 1080p high definition.

“The new Roku Streaming Stick gives consumers more choice for streaming entertainment to the TV than any other device,” Roku’s senior vice president of product management Jim Funk said.

“Consumers want a ton of entertainment, a friendly user interface, and options to control the experience with a remote or mobile device. This new Roku Streaming Stick brings all that and more – and in a tiny form factor.”

The new Roku Streaming Stick will cost £49.99 and arrive in shops from late April. It is available for pre-order now from Amazon.co.uk, Currys.co.uk and Roku.com/uk.
