We’d all like to keep our data safe and away from prying eyes but it can be all too easy for criminals to steal this information.

The datAshur Personal is an ultra-secure USB flash drive designed for everyday use, providing peace of mind over the security of sensitive data at an affordable price, claim the manufacturers.

The datAshur Personal includes an on-board keypad and the drive is unlocked by simply entering a personal 7-15 digit PIN code before connecting to a USB port. All data transferred to the device is hardware encrypted to military standard, this has much more integrity than software-based encryption, the security method commonly used for USB devices. The datAshur Personal automatically locks when unplugged from the host computer or when power to the USB port is turned off. With no software required, it could not be simpler to use.

The lightweight device is available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities, with prices starting at £29, and weighs less than 20 grams. The user-friendly design means no software or drivers need to be installed and the device is compatible with PCs, MACs, Linux, Citrix, Android and embedded systems.

In use, we found the device to be very secure. The files are protected by a PIN, which can be a string of up to 15 numbers. If the device gets lost or stolen, anyone who tries to access the contents will have 10 guesses of the PIN. After that the device automatically resets itself, deletes user and admin PINs, and the data on the device.

The files on it are encrypted with military grade full-disk AES 256-bit CBC hardware encryption, and crypto-parameters are protected with SHA-256 hashing.

The device is housed in a tough case, not terribly stylish but workmanlike.

If you are paranoid about your information falling into the wrong hands, this is definitely for you.
