BT has started a trial of its new “ultrafast” G.Fast broadband service in the Huntingdon area.

The test will later be extended to Swansea, Newcastle and Gosforth, with 2,000 customers using it over the next few weeks.
The tech uses a fast link from a specially equipped cabinet to a distribution point, before then using a noise-cancelling technology between the distribution point and the home. The result, which additionally obviates the need for moving copper to improve speeds, has been clocking in at around 330Mbps, more than ten times the current UK average.

BT claims that if the trials are successful, they could pave the way for delivering speeds of a few hundred megabits per second to millions of homes across the UK by 2020.

Culture Secretary John Whittingdale said: “The UK already leads Europe when it comes to superfast broadband coverage and speeds, with around 40,000 more homes and businesses getting access every week thanks to the government roll-out.

“We want to stay ahead of the competition and so it’s good to see this continued investment and innovation in the industry.”
