The much-delayed PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the latest Mortal Kombat game have been cancelled.

The tenth main instalment in the ultra-gory fighting series hit (and kicked, bit and decapitated) PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 back in April. A port for PS3 and 360 was originally slated for a summer release, but fears were raised back in May when US retailer GameStop shifted their listing of the port’s release to December 31st. The fears were confirmed on Friday when a representative of the game’s publisher, Warner Bros., posted the following message on the game’s community site:

“After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.  Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game.  We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned.”

Anyone who’s pre-ordered a copy should be able to obtain a refund from the retailer they placed the pre-order at.
