Drivers look to dash cams mostly for recording video in the case of an accident. It is handy to have proof of what has happened on the road.

The new lightweight MiVue 658 Wifi will start recording when you start your car and you can easily access the menu by touching the screen. The Extreme HD 2304 pixel camera records every journey you make. There is even a second SD card slot, you even have a backup of your video.

The integrated GPS tracks your route, including speed, altitude, longitude, latitude and heading. It also features integrated Wi-Fi so you can send your videos to your smartphone for backup, or share your experiences on Facebook via the MiVue app.

The instructions are basic but then when you get into the settings it is actually fairly easy to set up. There is a suction-cup screen mount with this dashcam, and it’s the type that you can rotate if you need to collect video evidence.

It runs the first time when you plug it into your car using the supplied cable. This is very long, so it can be easily tucked neatly away. We would have hoped that the cable was a USB lead with a car power adaptor for extra flexibility. That said, if you have your own USB cables you can use these instead.

The MiVue 658 WiFi features a beautiful, wide display. Menus are easy to negotiate and the touch screen is sensitive and fast. Full HD videos have a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The low light performance is fine, though the MiVue 658 WiFi does not contain infrared LED’s to support night vision. However, it is possible to disable the recording of sound. This can be convenient when you enter conversations you would not want to reveal.

The dashcam watermarks the image with important data. So how fast you drive, what are the time and date and the GPS coordinates are associated with your location.

In addition, Mio also records files with extra sensor data. These provide information about the G-forces on the car and other info.

This camera has two memory card slots, each capable of using up to 128 GB MicroSD cards (Class 10). The second memory card allows you to manually backup video clips you want to save if you are going to be away.

Overall, the Mio MiVue 658 WiFi comes across as a dashcam which is easy to install, although the cable is by far the biggest annoyance on the device.

The record button is also in a good location and is easily accessible. The images are perfect during the day and useful in the night. The resolution is top notch and the availability of sensor data when looking back over the Mio software is very nice.

The Mio MiVue is available from Amazon for £153.
