One of the great pleasures of the Assassin’s Creed series is poking around the series’ elaborate historical playgrounds and soaking up nuggets of factual trivia.  Ubisoft has acknowledged this with an update for next month’s instalment, which turns the game into a virtual museum.

Due to land in early 2018, the Discovery Tour update for Assassin’s Creed Origins will take the NPCs and assets from the Ancient Egypt-set main game and curate them to form an interactive tour.  These tours sound quite extensive – the devs have given the example of one where a priest conducts a mummification ritual on a corpse, with a voiceover explaining the process, which should take about twenty minutes total.

Additionally, completing tours unlocks other characters to explore the museum with, with Aya (wife of protagonist Bayek), Cleopatra or even Julius Caesar among those up for grabs.

According to Ubisoft, the idea for the mode arose from news that teachers were using various instalments in the Assassin’s Creed series (which has spanned locales including Jerusalem during the Crusades, Renaissance Italy, Victorian London, Revolutionary Paris, the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy and more) to raise their students’ interest in the cultures they were studying.  Putting this mode in, makes the historical trivia points – and presumably not the Dan Brown-esque alternate history that makes up the games’ core plots (unless Pope Alexander VI did actually have magic powers) – easier to access.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is due out for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 27th.  The Discovery Tour update should follow in early 2018.
