TP-Link has gone from strength to strength over the last few years with its offerings such as routers and access points but has steadily entered the smart home market over the last few years with its TP-Link Kasa brand range.

This sports a good selection of reasonably-priced smart plugs, LED bulbs and switches.  The latest of which is the TP-Link Kasa Cam Outdoor (KC200) that builds on the success of last year’s Kasa Cam.

It is a weatherproof, full HD security camera that’s priced well below top-of-the-range competitors. it’s a budget camera with lots of features, 1080p video, two-way audio, compact build, motion detection, audio detection, night vision, cloud storage & live view, loads of great features but no provision for SD card storage. There is only provision to store 3 hours of video locally (on the camera), then you have to rely upon cloud storage.

It has a solid quality feel to the unit, much better than we expected. Setup is easy; just plug in the power cable. Download and install the Kasa app download on iOS, register for account and follow on screen instructions to add and name your Kasa Cam. The camera is supplied with about a 2metre power lead, with a USB connection at one end, and a main plug is supplied. This could be a problem if you want to feed the power cable through a wall as a bigger hole would have to be made to accommodate the USB plug.

The field of view (130°) is perfect for outdoor use. The motion detection is great, you can turn off the notifications should you wish or decrease/increase the sensitivity. You can also zoom in via the app. If you zoom in significantly picture does loose a little of it’d HD definition, however, still more than good enough. The sound is acceptable. It has a two-way mic, so we used it instead of an intercom or ring doorbell to communicate with those outside. However, the microphone is extremely sensitive and will start recording at the slightest sound

The Kasa Cam Outdoor KC200 offers easy installation for less money than the Nest Cam. Video is excellent and motion and sound detection were reliable.
